River Clean Ups

The Sackville River is considered an Urban River as part of it runs through heavily populated areas of Sackville and Bedford. As a result of the surrounding urbanization, the river often collects garbage and debris due to careless disposal practices. Each year, hundreds of bags of garbage are collected from urbanized areas of the Sackville River. Small waste and debris such as food wrappers, paper cups, Styrofoam, etc, is bothersome to aquatic ecosystems because it builds up along the shoreline, and can even be consumed by fish, choking or suffocating them.

On April 20th 2010, the 1st Bedford Scouts, Cubs and Beavers kindly took the Frenchman's Brook for a clean up. At the end of the day they managed to have collected 75 full bags of garbage and recyclables and numerous paint cans, propane tanks and other debris.

The SRA would like to extend a thank you out to all of the youth, leaders and parents for all their hard work.
